Raama Mehra Detained for Smuggling Endangered Species

SEAToday.com, Jakarta - Bollywood actor Raama Mehra was detained by Soekarno-Hatta airport customs officials on Monday (7/1) after they found him smuggling three protected animals in a suitcase bound for Mumbai, India. 

In a press conference on Thursday (7/4), Soekarno-Hatta Customs chief Gatot Sugeng Wibowo said, "...a small yellow bird of paradise (Paradisaea minor), a bald Papuan bird of paradise (Cicinnurus respublica), and an albino small-clawed otter (Aonyx cinereus) were found in the luggage disguised with various kinds of food, clothes, handbags, and children's toys.”

The confiscated animals were handed over to the Jakarta Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA) for eventual release.

This case has been upgraded to the investigation stage and violates Article 102A of Law No. 17/2006 on Customs with a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment and a fine of 5 billion rupiah.
